Doug A. Horner, Chairman of the Canada Asian Synergy Group identified China as Alberta’s second largest trade partner.  “I congratulate Concordia for moving forward with this. This is important. Not only to Alberta but to Canada.”

The Centre’s focus will be on Chinese teacher development, the Chinese Language and China Studies, allowing greater accessibility to Chinese culture and language to the educational and business community in Alberta, improving and enhancing understanding from all sides.  A shortage of Canadian teachers of the Chinese language and culture was identified as a significant barrier for Canadians and the Centre will bridge this gap.

Representing the Government of Alberta, MLA Chris Neilson, is “proud to support the initiatives that help diversify Alberta’s international education offerings and build stronger relationships with our Chinese partners.”

The Centre for Chinese Studies “demonstrates that Concordia University of Edmonton is part of a global community that values the language and culture of our students, their parents, and their home nation,” said President Gerald Krispin at the Launch Ceremony.  “We will all be enriched! The Centre for Chinese Studies will therefore not only open doors, but also hearts and minds as we share our experiences, teach our cultures, and learn our languages.
